Mighty Men Conference

I have heard it said many times, “this is all about Angus Buchan or they just try get money” – the best one i have heard is they want to “steal members from our congregations”

I’m a photographer and not a pastor, but I am saved by Jesus and I see the truth through my lens when people are on their knees in the dirt of some farm land, praising and singing to Jesus. There is nothing about Angus Buchan and there is never a mention of money, honestly if a ticket only costs R50, how could there be any money making.

How it all started

In 2003 the Lord laid it on Angus’ heart to mentor young men. The message the Lord gave him was to teach men to be Christlike leaders in their households:

• Prophet: Men have the great privilege of speaking the words of God to their families.

• Priest: To pray and intercede before God for their families.

• King: To lead, provide for, and defend their families.

That is not to say that men are more important than women. We encourage men to take their rightful place to bless the people in their lives. Things go well when we walk in the way of Jesus; families flourish, women are respected, loved, protected, and children thrive.

Since 2003 and the initial events on Shalom Farm, MMC has grown far beyond what we could have imagined – Mighty Men Conferences are happening worldwide. Events are run by independent organisers who meet once a year at Shalom Farm to be further encouraged with the significant task on their hands.

The MMC message is simple

• Men need to be Godly examples in the workplace. Whether on the sports field, in the factory, on the farm, at college or university, they must lead by example.

• Physical, spiritual and mental attitudes towards life must convey the fragrance of Jesus Christ in everything. Our lifestyles must match up with what we say.

• Men must understand that they are responsible for their family, community and nation. Men are encouraged to be good fathers, good husbands, good leaders and good citizens for the benefit of the Kingdom of God.

• Men must be responsible when it comes to the management of finances, moral standards & Biblical principles.

• Value God’s opinion on matters above all others.

• Scripture must qualify everything we say.

MMC events are a time for men to come away to meet with Jesus and be taught, encouraged, and strengthened in God. The whole family is encouraged to join in on the final Sunday session – everyone is welcome.

My experience covering the MMC

My first Mighty Men was in 2023 in Jeffreys Bay, Eastern Cape and happens each year in March at the Farm Mooi Uitsig.
Let me tell you what my personal experience was and what you can expect.

Rolling towards the farm from Gqeberha, Port Elizabeth my brother and I had the bakkie loaded, coffee snacks and some extras ready for the exciting weekend on friday morning early to make sure we could pick a good camping spot to pitch the tent and unpack.

We rolled into the Mooi Uitsig farm and picked a decent spot and got all setup, it was a hot day and seeing the view of the ocean not to far away was so tempting to just go have a swim, but chatting to the guys already there was more important and getting to know the guys next to us.
This is one of the very big things about the MMC, it doesn’t matter who you are, what job you do, what you have or don’t have. Everyman is the same and each one recognises that, because we are all the same under Jesus! Of course there are men there that have been invited by a friend and haven’t been saved yet, but they just feel at home and i can say that they wouldn’t know why, but it just feels right.

I decided to walk around the camp site and say hi to some of the Mighty Men volunteers and get to know where the food is, the toilets and all that, but one of the Prayer  Warriors (these are men who are led by the Holy Spirit to help the men) knew my brother so we stopped and chatted for a while and this is when I saw something so miraculous and this was just the start of the weekend full of Holy Spirit power.

In front of my eyes I saw a young man healed

I watched as the man prayed for another man and was talking with him, when a young man came over who was working on the temporary lighting before the event and asked if he could be prayed for, as though he was led to ask.
He said that for months since he had a fall, that he wasn’t able to just get out of bed until he massaged his leg and slowly bent it and even then, there was pain all day. He also said his neck was always in constant pain.

My brother and I stepped aside to let the prayer warriors do what they do, but they said “No, step forward and be a part of this”.
We anointed him with oil and prayed over him and not even a few mins and he said he can feel his leg is different and the pain in his neck was gone!

For the first time in months, he could turn his neck without moving his whole upper body, he said his leg was like it was before and there and then he jumped around and even danced on it! praise and glory to Jesus for the healing.

There were many stories i heard of men changing their ways, healing and deliverance of all kinds of things and even lives saved from wanting to just give up and take their own lives.

We prayed and God sent the sign to end the drought

The eastern cape had been having a very prolonged dry season for many years, where the rest of the country was receiving rain, the eastern cape just wasn’t. To the point that the dams were dry and one or two had such a little that many people were starting to go without water.
On the sunday, which is family day, where the families can join their men, we prayed for rain and the sigh in the sky was given by God and the rain came, we now have every dam full and overflowing, praise God Almighty!

The Mighty Men is really an important event that is held all over the country with many men reaching others and the one common thing that is echoed through them all, is that it has nothing to do with Angus Buchan, it’s about Jesus! Uncle Angus was merely obedient and followed God’s instruction and this has allowed so many men to change their lives, to be better fathers, better husbands to be better men.

To see men also bring their sons with them is amazing, because the sons learn from the father and see other men all understanding that we are all under God and we must look after out families and everything around us.

MMC is not about money

I never once heard anyone ask for money for anything, never once did I hear anyone ask for donations of any kind. There are donation drums around, but it is never asked for, but the men do give as they choose to and only if they want to. The tickets are only R50 each, I mean what can you really buy with that amount of money, the MMC is all about God!

There is no alcohol allowed at all, there is no loud music, no parties and it’s lights out at 11pm in the camps and everyone just really enjoys it. the guys are all generally up at 6am and showering and making breakfast or heading the the vendor areas to get coffee and then it’s time for praise and worship and the speakers share and teach the men. After that the guys mix with each other in the whole area and make new friends, maybe start braaing or play soccer. The guys are on guitars and singing to Jesus and everyone is welcome anywhere you go, nobody discriminates, because we are all one under Jesus!

There is other things that go on in the afternoon and guys are welcome to join, men are in the prayer tents and some being baptised, it’s a very spirit filled time that is like nothing you have known. The evening session rolls on at about 7pm, but of course the vendors have fab shirts and caps at cheap prices, as well as the food available is very affordable and always alot for the small amount they charge and delicious!
The steak rolls and cips are top class.

Family Day

Sunday is of course family day and all the ladies and families are welcome to come and join the men for an amazing outdoor service.
This is were without a doubt, everyone sees how the men have been impacted by the Holy Spirit. They are refreshed, renewed and changed!

Each man gets that specific need met, i don’t mean a simple want, but what God knows he truly needs and that is what they get and much more that allows them to be who God want’s them to be, so they can go out and make the change in the world around them.

make sure you get your ticket and one for a friend, maybe for your husband or family member.

God Bless You & Your Family
